Pin Ups, Hot Rods, and Roller Derby Girls!

Pin ups, hot rods, and roller derby girls make for a great weekend! I spent Friday night and Saturday at the Atlanta World of Wheels – partially to be one of the official photographers for the first WoW Pin Up contest, and partially to hang out with and photograph my home roller derby league, the Atlanta Roller Girls. It didn’t hurt things a bit that two current derby girls and one retired derby girl were in the pin up contest, and another retired derby girl was part of one of the sponsors.
There were awesome cars on display, some great music from the Psycho Devilles, and the first public exhibition bout of roller derby with the Atlanta Roller Girls “pick up teams”. The floor was – interesting. The Atlanta World of Wheels is held at the Georgia World Congress Center, and the floor is polished concrete – a surface that doesn’t provide a great deal of traction. To help the floor stick, a motorcycle stunt team spread Coca Cola syrup all over it, creating a
very sticky surface perfect for gripping the tires of stunt motorcycles and the wheels of roller derby girls. Of course, when the inevitable derby girl spills occurred, they certainly didn’t go sliding into a wall or audience member. Think “fly paper”.
It was a great weekend, and lots of folks got to see genuine women’s flat track roller derby for the first time. I hope we garnered more fans!
