Damned Impressive
Mar 5th, 2010 | By Ed Selby | Category: Featured Articles, Roller Derby PhotographyI was changing around some of the graphic elements of the website today (new background and logo), and I noticed a few pictures over there in the right hand column that pulls the roller derby pictures Flickr feed. I jumped over to see them embiggened, and I was impressed.
There are a veritable ton of roller derby action photos in the Flickr group. Sometimes it becomes almost boring to see one more elbow throwing jam. Looking at the details, and focusing on the small stuff often makes for a more interesting roller derby photograph. It seems Jon VonCross agrees with that.
Jon has a set of photos from the Feb. 28, 2010 TXRD Roller Derby at the Palmer Event Center in Austin, TX – The Holy Rollers vs The Cherry Bombs. The pictures Jon got of some of the details, and the non-skating action were very cool.
Not only did Jon capture details, he didn’t use an “expected” mid or long focal length lens. Jon went WIDE ANGLE! He also employed on of my personal favorite techniques, and dragged the shutter.
I sent Jon an email to ask his permission to post this photo of his (as I always do), and he sent back this reply, “Had a blast shooting my first bout…” This was Jon’s very first roller derby bout! I think Jon may very well give a lot of us veterans a run for our money in this roller derby photography game.
Rollergirl Photographer gives roller derby photographer newcomer Jon VonCross a HIGH FIVE!
